Haying the fields at DRA
Great Salt Bay Farm, DRA's headquarters preserve,
helps to sustain local agriculture. Not only are its fields actively hayed by a local farmer (above), but it is also
home to the Damariscotta Farmers' Market
and the DRA Community Garden (info below).

The Damariscotta River Association (DRA) is a non-profit community-supported land trust working in the greater Damariscotta River region. DRA conserves critical land and water resources, including outstanding wildlife habitat, public access, and cultural treasures like oyster shell middens.

We invite you to visit our preserves, take part in our events and programs, and to join our efforts as a member, volunteer, or donor.

What's New: (updated 6/18/2010)

Stay Tuned – New offerings are posted often, so return frequently to our web site to see what's happening!

Calendar of Events: By Day/Week/Month/List – click on the link at the top of the calendar to come back here

DRA Community Garden Plots: The Damariscotta River Association is now taking reservations for plots in the Organic Community Garden at the DRA’s Great Salt Bay Farm. The plots average 150 to 200 square feet in size. A tool shed with tools for gardeners to use is located on site. The garden was tilled on May 3 and plots must be planted by June 15. To reserve a garden site contact the DRA ((207) 563-1393 for the Gardening Agreement form. The fee is $25.00 per site.
Young Gardeners Love The Community Garden at DRA     The DRA garden is a place for the community to grow organic and healthy food. In the DRA Organic Community Garden pesticides and herbicides may not be used. The only pest controls that will be permitted must be Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Associations (MOFGA) approved. The DRA supports locally grown food and community agriculture by hosting the Damariscotta Farmers’ Market, providing land for food production for local schools and food pantries, supplying hay from its extensive fields, and providing the Children’s Garden and the Organic Community Garden.

Additional Programs and Events: Monday Meanders (family hikes at different DRA preserves with Naturalists) are happening now on the second Monday of each month from 1pm to 3pm unless noted otherwise:

Archaeology Field School: This year, archaeologist Tim Dinsmore will resume his research into the 18th-century Bryant-Barker Tavern site located along the west bank of the Damariscotta River in Newcastle. See our Archaeology Page for more information and a registration form! This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the fundamental rigors of archaeological research and to help advance this important project – and to have fun!

Trail Tamers: Spring is upon us and with it the trail maintenance season. We have already conquered many of the winter blowdowns, but plenty of trail taming remains. We’ll be meeting at least once a month on the third Thursday of the month at 9:00AM (unless otherwise noted) for Trail Taming this year. Most events will be done before noon unless otherwise noted. Please join us!

TICK ALERT. Ticks are out in force this spring. Please remember to tuck in pants, apply appropriate repellent, and above all do a nightly tick check. Please visit Maine CDC for more information and resources.

Round Top Farm: Information regarding usage and rental of the Barn, the Gallery, and the Old Ice Cream Shop at Round Top Farm is now online.
